In late 2017, New Orleans guitarist Colin Lake was ready for a change. In the eight years since he’d moved to town from the Pacific Northwest, he’d played hundreds of gigs and released two well-received albums of blues- and folk-tinged roots music.
Feeling the need to close one chapter of his life and open another, he and his wife sold their house and bought a sailboat. They spent much of the next 2½ years exploring the Western Caribbean, plying the waters of the Bahamas, Cuba, Mexico, Belize, Honduras and Guatemala.
Before setting sail, Lake had starting working on a new set of songs. In 2019, during a stopover in New Orleans, he and producer/drummer Eric Heigle finished recording those songs. Houston-based Splice Records cut a deal to release them in 2020, when Lake planned to return to New Orleans and hit the festival circuit to promote his new music.
